Yoga from the beginning.

What is yoga?


It is very simple. Carefully broken down to us in the form of ancient science yoga is only one thing.


Sutra 1.2 Yogash chitta vritti nirodhah.

Yoga is the control (nirodhah, regulation, channeling, mastery, integration, coordination, stilling, quieting, setting aside) of the modifications (gross and subtle thought patterns) of the mind field. Yoga is the mastery of the activities of the mind field.

This should be clear when being introduced to the meditative practice of yoga. We are used to seeing attractive yogis stretching and flexing their yoga moves but it goes much further and beyond the body movements, and with so many physical yoga styles now available we seem to miss the goal and meaning of what the true yoga practice is. Never mind the physical... Let's get focused.


The ancient sage Vyasa explains yoga is samadhi, the high state of perfected concentration or complete absorption of attention.


Do you have the ability to retain perfect concentration?


For how long can you hold your attention to one thought before another one arises to interrupt?


Sounds terrible... being interrupted all day by random unnecessary thoughts. Like being interrupted by a loud annoying commercial on the radio. If only it was as easy as turning the volume down.


This is what yoga is historically and scientifically designed for.
